CAMPHOR

Camphor has been used as antipruritic (relieving or preventing itching).  It has anti-infective properties (counteracting infection).  Camphor is used externally as a rubefacient (reddens the skin, producing hyperemia/increased blood supply) and analgesic (relieving pain) in such conditions as myalgia, fibrositis, lumbago and neuralgia. Camphor is also a counterirritant (diverts the attention of the patient from the pain.  The basic mechanism is irritation that produces warmth and redness).   Counterirritants are used for relief of pain of muscular aches, sprains, neuralgia, arthritis and similar conditions.  Camphor produces a thermal effect when rubbed on the skin.

MENTHOL

Menthol has been used as a topical antipruritic, local analgesic, local anesthetic and an antiseptic.  Menthol provides relief from itching by substituting a thermal sensation for that of itching.  In headache and other forms of neuralgia, the external application of menthol frequently produces as considerable degree of relief.   It has been used to control superficial inflammations such as boils, or carbuncles.   Menthol is also a counterirritant.  When locally applied, menthol stimulates a thermal effect, and depresses the sensation of pain.
