EUCALYPTUS OIL
Eucalyptus oil has been used for centuries in the treatment of arthritic conditions, as well as aromatherapy.
CAMPHOR
Camphor has been used as antipruritic (relieving or preventing itching). It has anti-infective properties (counteracting infection). Camphor is used externally as a rubefacient (reddens the skin, producing hyperemia/increased blood supply) and analgesic (relieving pain) in such conditions as myalgia, fibrositis, lumbago and neuralgia. Camphor is also a counterirritant (diverts the attention of the patient from the pain. The basic mechanism is irritation that produces warmth and redness). Counterirritants are used for relief of pain of muscular aches, sprains, neuralgia, arthritis and similar conditions. Camphor produces a thermal effect when rubbed on the skin.
MENTHOL
Menthol has been used as a topical antipruritic, local analgesic,
local anesthetic and an antiseptic. Menthol provides relief from itching by
substituting a thermal sensation for that of itching. In headache and other forms of
neuralgia, the external application of menthol frequently produces a considerable degree
of relief. It has been used to control superficial inflammations such as boils, or
carbuncles. Menthol is also a counterirritant. When locally applied, menthol
stimulates a thermal effect, and depresses the sensation of pain.
BENZYL ALCOHOL
Benzyl Alcohol has antiseptic, antimicrobial (killing microorganisms or suppresses their multiplication and growth) and bacteriostatic (inhibits the growth or multiplication of bacteria) properties. It works as a local anesthetic (loss of sensation of pain).
EUGENOL
Eugenol has been used as an analgesic and as an anesthetic.
THYMOL
Thymol is antipruritic, anti-infective, anti-fungal, antiseptic and works as a local anesthetic.
WITCH HAZEL
Witch Hazel has been used as a mild astringent and has local sedative properties.
It is used as a cooling application to sprains and bruises, as a hemostatic for
small superficial wounds, and for minor skin irritation.
ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL
Isopropyl Alcohol has been used as an anti-infective, antiseptic and rubefacient. It is bacteriacidal (destroys bacteria).
ALOE
Aloe was known in ancient times, as far back as the time of Alexander
the Great, and mentioned in the works of Dioscorides and of Celsus. As far back as
the 16th and 17th centuries, aloe was used locally in the treatment of wounds and
burns. It has also been used in the treatment of x-ray burns during the 20th
century.
